Widely regarded as the “Godfather of Modern Birmingham Food”, Andreas has dedicated more than four decades to elevating culinary standards, nurturing talent, and helping establish Birmingham and the wider Midlands as one of the UK’s leading food destinations. Born into a Greek-Cypriot family and classically trained through some of Europe’s finest kitchens, Andreas brought world-class expertise to the Midlands, where his influence would become transformational. In 1993, he opened Simpsons, a restaurant that would go on to earn a Michelin Star and become one of the most respected dining destinations in the country. Under his leadership, Simpsons built an international reputation for excellence and innovation, becoming a benchmark for fine dining. His contribution extends far beyond his own restaurants. Throughout his career, Andreas has mentored and inspired a generation of chefs who have gone on to become some of the UK’s most celebrated culinary figures, including Glynn Purnell, Luke Tipping, and Andy Waters. His commitment to developing talent has left a lasting legacy that continues to shape the industry today. In addition to the success of Simpsons, Andreas opened The Cross in Kenilworth, which also achieved Michelin Star status, further cementing his reputation as one of Britain’s most influential restaurateurs. Through his restaurants, business ventures, and unwavering passion for hospitality, he has championed quality, innovation, and excellence at every level. As the hospitality industry faces new challenges and the chapter of Simpsons draws to a close after more than three decades, Andreas Antona’s contribution remains immeasurable. His vision, leadership, mentorship, and dedication have transformed the region’s food landscape and inspired countless hospitality professionals. It is therefore fitting that we recognise Andreas Antona with the Lifetime Achievement Award, in honour of an extraordinary career and a legacy that will continue to influence British hospitality for generations to come.
